Apache Junction police arrest 10 in child exploitation sting
The Apache Junction Police Department said it worked with federal, state, local and non-governmental partners on a two-day undercover operation aimed at people using the internet and social media to solicit minors for sexual activity.
Officials said the operation ran June 5-6. During the investigation, undercover investigators posed as minors online, documented communications, and coordinated meetings at a controlled location, where suspects were taken into custody.
Police said 10 people were arrested and booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center. They were charged with felony counts including luring a minor for sexual exploitation, attempted sexual conduct with a minor, sex trafficking, aggravated luring, and misconduct involving weapons.
Officials said none of those arrested were Apache Junction residents. Police said all 10 traveled from other Arizona communities to Apache Junction believing they were meeting a child for sexual activity. Bonds were set as high as $350,000.
The department said the operation was carried out in partnership with the Chandler Police Department, City of Mesa Police Department, Queen Creek Police Department, Arizona Department of Public Safety GIITEM, Department of Homeland Security, Rocky Mountain Information Network, Drug Enforcement Administration, Pinal County Attorney's Office, Darkhorse Benefits, and Arizona Anti-Trafficking Network.
In a statement, the Apache Junction Police Department said the operation targeted people seeking to engage in child sex trafficking, sexual exploitation of minors, and other crimes against children.
