Police warn of scam text claiming delinquent traffic violation
PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department said in its reports that the Arizona Supreme Court issued a warning about a text message with an image claiming you have a delinquent traffic violation. The warning says this is a scam and to delete the message if you receive it. The alert references a link to a Facebook photo.
In the same update, the message content described as a fraudulent notice appears to be a Final Court-Ordered Mandatory Collection Notice from the State of Arizona in the Municipal Court of Phoenix, Maricopa County, Traffic Division. The notice lists case number AZ-26-TR-273196 and a judge named Michael Rodriguez.
The notice allegedly shows ENFORCEMENT STATUS: ACTIVE - NON-COMPLIANCE CONFIRMED and states that the violation account has been officially declared delinquent and in default, with all prior notices, deadlines and opportunities for voluntary compliance exhausted and terminated. It says the matter is now subject to mandatory collection enforcement.
The listed violations include: failure to pay electronic toll / toll evasion; parking violation; speeding violation. The notice cites Authority: A.R.S. § 28-7702 and Related Authority: A.R.S. § 28-1598. It requires immediate action: remit full payment in total of all outstanding tolls, fines, penalties, administrative fees, court costs and enforcement surcharges; or appear before the court at a scheduled hearing. It warns that failure to comply will result in automated and irreversible enforcement.
The alert from the police department characterizes the message as another scam.
